Latin text in the hand of Cristobal de Cabrera who signs his name on verso of leaf [10]
This is the notice issued by Juan de Zumárraga, a Spanish Basque Franciscan who was appointed the Bishop and inquisitor of Mexico. He was appointed the Bishop of Mexico City in 1530 and installed in Rome in December of 1533. He arrived in Mexico in October of 1534. In 1546, the Diocese of Mexico was elevated to the Archdiocese of Mexico with Juan de Zumárraga as its first Archbishop, an office in which he served until his death in 1548
The printed text of this notice can be found in Concilium mexicanum provinciale, edited by Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana, printed in Mexico, 1769 with the title: Erectio ecclesiae Mexicanae quae eadem est cum ceteris ejusdem provinciae
Leaves [1-9] contain the 1534-1535 text of Juan de Zumárraga transcibed by Cristobal de Cabrera. Leaves [2-4] recto are dated: Rome, September 5th, 1534 and contain the notice of Zumárraga's elevation to bishop. Leaves [5-9] recto are dated: Toledo 1534, and comprise the organization of the diocese and is signed by the bishop. It is further certified by Cabrera, the apostolic notary, and dated Mexico City, 1535 on leaf [9] verso
Author is identified as "Ioannes de Cumarraga" on recto of leaf [2] recto
Leaves [11-16] contain an English translation by Henry Harrisse which is dated Madrid, May 1876 on modern white paper. It also contains biographical sketches of Juan de Zumárraga and Cristóbal Cabrera
A paper-covered wax ecclesiastial seal on ribbon is bound into the volume
